What Have We Become? by Nicholas Galanin…

Originally the body of work created for [this book] was presented through the construction of generic paper faces devoid of any cultural reference despite the work being conceived through my experiences within contemporary Tlingit culture, and indeed my Tlingit heritage and genealogy, My original aim was to allow the viewer to create his or her own interpretation without putting the viewer into a culturally familiar position. Now the viewer can unravel references to Tlingit visual culture and a number of elements on the politics of cultural representation.
The faces are supplemented by video and photography to fill in ‘the gray areas’, those intersections of customary and non-customary by providing subtle clues for the viewer using both familiar and foreign forms, text and language. (via)
