I know it’s old news by now, but for some reason I kept thinking about Sam Fuller’s Flying as I was bouncing around the city today…
Artist Sam Fuller opens our eyes to the vertical beauty of the city, in this case New York, by filming the flight of a paper airplane as it descends from a tall building. Fuller takes a rather mundane act, the folding and flying of a paper airplane, and turns it into a dramatic visual narrative accompanied by a beautiful soundtrack. The film isn’t just entertaining, it opens our eyes to a new perspective on urban space, while evoking the romanticism of flight. When the paper airplane finally lands on the street, we can’t help feel a little sad, hoping someone will save the little airplane before it’s run over. But Fuller pans the camera away, and the viewer is left to wonder about its fate. Like all great art, Fuller manages to invest an inanimate object -a paper airplane- with emotional content. (via)
