Still bitter from having to bail on Art Basel for work, I recently crashed the vacation of went on a last minute trip to Hawaii with an old friend… We spent the first night in Honolulu and the remainder of our trip at Turtle Bay on the North Shore. Turtle Bay is a gorgeous spot. I’d imagine it’s a great place to be when the weather isn’t stormy (which it was for the majority of our trip) and if you’re there on a honeymoon rather than with - let’s say - a friend whose former flame has stalked him to the only hotel within a 40 mile radius. On a more positive note, I can now fully appreciate the plot and location of Forgetting Sarah Marshall. All things considered, Hawaii was a blast and I’m really glad that I invited myself went but I’ll forever favor the convenience of the Caribbean.

Porn by Marc Bijl…
I saw this piece (which obviously pulls from Robert Indiana’s famous Love sculpture) for the first time at Art Basel this year. While I was browsing around the booth, a father and his daughter appeared by my side. She immediately pointed up at the piece and demanded an explanation. “That’s an interpretation of the Love sculpture that your mother has,” he offered. The child looked confused. “No Daddy,” she precociously insisted, “P-O-R-N what does that mean?” Without hesitation her father cleared his throat, took a quick glance around and tried again. “Oh… Well Honey, that stands for Play Only Really Nice.” Before she could ask anymore questions, he scooped her up and they were gone.

While I was out of town for Art Basel, a handful of friends attended the annual Winter Wonderland Ball at the New York Botanical Gardens. Among the stories of the evening, was the tale of a certain moment on the dance floor (involving a spin and flip) between Jack Bryan and Lauren Remington Platt. It was not until I saw Peter Davis’ photographic evidence that I fully understood what had taken place. I ran into Jack last night and asked him about his gravity-defying dance moves. “Hey,” he joked “it’s not my fault that I can dance so well…”

“Feel Good” sign at Art Basel’s hub… Artist unknown (but it reminded me of Bruce Nauman’s work).

I’m still in Miami for Art Basel. I’ll be back in Manhattan tomorrow and look forward to updating this (very neglected) little blog as soon as I have a few moments to myself…

Sorry for the lack of posts lately. I’ve been really busy and bouncing around a lot (Caribbean, Connecticut, etc.) but hopefully I’ll have things back on track before I leave for Art Basel this week… If you’re also heading to Miami definitely shoot me an email and let me know. The more the merrier.
