Welcome.

I'm a graphic and interactive designer. I live in New York City, but frequent Los Angeles. This is where I toss my ridiculous ideas, conversations, inspirations, etc. I can be reached at info@ashleysimko.com

Sorry for the lack of posts lately. I’ve been really busy and bouncing around a lot (Caribbean, Connecticut, etc.) but hopefully I’ll have things back on track before I leave for Art Basel this week… If you’re also heading to Miami definitely shoot me an email and let me know. The more the merrier.

I took this photo (with my iPhone) from a window in my bedroom at my family’s house in Connecticut last spring. If you look to the far left you can see the reflection of a bird feeder. It’s funny how growing up in the country I couldn’t wait to leave, and now I often finding myself counting down the days until my next visit. It’s always so nice to see my family, and our house offers a welcome escape from the chaos of New York City as well as the overindulgence of the Hamptons.
Last night I had a chance to swing by to see my mother and grandmother (Mitzi) before heading to a project this morning. My father was away on business so it was just the three of us and the ferocious guard dogs poodles… I can’t remember the last time that I laughed so hard or slept so well.

On our way to visit my parents in Connecticut on Sunday, Pierce Jackson and I achieved a new level of stupid. About 15 minutes into our trip, we approached our first toll. Everything was going well as we pulled into the “cash only” lane - until we realized that neither of us actually had any cash. Not a damn dollar. Soon following the obligatorily frantic (and failed) search for any spare change within the car, we were forced to surrender Pierce’s license and “please pull over to the side”. We waited for a few years minutes. Eventually, an officer came over and we were issued us ticket Deferred Toll Pay Request for a lofty $4.75 - a mere fraction of the financial bitch slap that I had initially anticipated…

Some people have grandmothers who bake them gross food, buy them ugly sweaters and smell funny. Luckily, both of mine are legitimately awesome. My mom’s mom (Mitzi) is essentially a modern-day superwoman. When she isn’t traveling, she splits her time between trying to conquer the stock market, practicing Reiki, and volunteering at the Special Education center near her house in Connecticut. I’ve always admired Mitzi, but I don’t think I truly understood appreciated just how incredible she was until last winter - when I watched her playing the organ at her own mother’s funeral. I remember watching her force back tears as she played each note perfectly…
Yesterday, I received a postcard Mitzi sent from Iceland - where she’s temporarily paused after bouncing around the world for the last 30-something days. Topics of interest: she’s gone through 10 disposable cameras (she refuses to use a digital one because she’s convinced she will lose it), whether or not her garden at home is a sea of weeds, and how well my project in Los Angeles went. Adorable alert! (photo via)

  • Sister: I'll blame that spellcheck mishap on delirium
  • Simko: Fair assumption on your behalf
  • Sister: mom just made me rush home (threatening tornado warnings) mind you it is a clear, cloudless sky
  • Simko: It's her way of saying "welcome back to Connecticut"
  • Sister: no thank you

You can’t really see it but it’s a sign hanging where a massive flag used to hang asking for… Yes… Their massive flag back. Ahhh Connecticut.

My sister and I are still en-route to our parent’s house in Connecticut… Traveling this afternoon was the dumbest idea we’ve had in a while.
