Paper Chair designed by Mathias Bengtsson…
Mathias Bengtsson’s Paper Chair mixes both digital and handmade process to create a chair from recycled paper. Each of the 2000 profiles is coated with a thin film of glue, then stacked together and exposed to both pressure and heat, forming a “homogeneous 3-dimensional body.” Bengtsson uses both black and white paper to highlight the form and lend it a graphic nature. Meet my new(est) jacket lapel and brooch… Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice. Noted.
I snagged this photo while I was at an event for Tim Burton’s retrospective at MoMA earlier this week. The entire exhibit is pretty wild. I don’t want to spoil any of the surprises, but it’s definitely worth a visit - costumes, props, napkin sketches, paintings, etc. There are also a few short films being played in the entrance hallway (just after the mouth above). There’s so much to see (more than 700 pieces in total) that I can’t wait to go back and swoon over everything when I don’t have to worry about juggling a cocktail and a camera at the same time.
This behind the scenes video is also worth watching. (via) Discussed: drawing, themes in his work, favorite movies and why he wears striped socks.
Thanks to all of the Performa events going on around the city, I’ve been stumbling across some interesting new spots. I took this photo of Chashama 679 (while there for Christian Tomaszewski’s show) this weekend… I still have a soft spot for stripes. Seriously.
The first pair of obnoxious sneakers that I ever purchased (accidentally) matched my living room walls in all of their bright green glory. So I suppose it’s only appropriate that my second has turned out to (almost) match my living room rug. Presenting the newest addition to my closet: Reebok’s Freestyle Hi Int Neopolitan. They were the last pair left and they happen to be exactly my size. See also: fate. My mother helped me call them ugly while rolling her eyes pick them out while she was in town. I know, I know… They’re arguably the most hideous high tops on the planet, but I absolutely adore them.
Stripe Show Shirt by Alexander McQueen…
Silhouettes and shapes don’t have to be physically created, optical illusions can achieve the same effect. Alexander McQueen achieves the same success in terms of creating impressionable silhouette through his famed skills in cut and drape with graphic prints and visual effects. The new Stripe Show Shirt has horizontal navy and white graduated stripes that create a gradient effect which visually tucks the wearer’s middle in like an hourglass. Made in lightweight cotton, you will look and feel slim in this near trippy dress shirt– no Photoshop necessary. (via)
Once again, Chanel has managed to brand an everyday object and put it on the market for an astronomically inflated price. Introducing the Chanel guitar and quilted case…
The 2009 Spring Summer Guitar By Chanel: Debuted at the Paris Spring 2009 Fashion Week, the guitar is a black acoustic instrument, with Chanel discretely spelled out across the top of the neck and the classic double CCs can be seen in the guitar’s resonant cavity.
The strap is striped in brown, white and black with intertwining C’s embossed in leather where the strap attaches. The most elegant piece of all is the guitar’s case, in Chanel’s signature quilted pattern and in stylish white. Price? $4,030.00 (via)
