Porn by Marc Bijl…
I saw this piece (which obviously pulls from Robert Indiana’s famous Love sculpture) for the first time at Art Basel this year. While I was browsing around the booth, a father and his daughter appeared by my side. She immediately pointed up at the piece and demanded an explanation. “That’s an interpretation of the Love sculpture that your mother has,” he offered. The child looked confused. “No Daddy,” she precociously insisted, “P-O-R-N what does that mean?” Without hesitation her father cleared his throat, took a quick glance around and tried again. “Oh… Well Honey, that stands for Play Only Really Nice.” Before she could ask anymore questions, he scooped her up and they were gone.

I (still) absolutely hate packing… Soon after returning from a project in the Caribbean, I decided to accept an invitation to Art Basel in Miami. Instead of taking the time to repack (as any respectable person might), I decided to simply add a few pieces every tacky article of clothing that I own and bring the same suitcase. This morning my mother called to ask me when I’d be heading to Connecticut for the holidays, and I decided that it was finally time to unpack the aforementioned suitcase. I’m only several items in and it already looks like I’m unpacking the wardrobe of a baby hooker.

Proposals for Miami #2 by Peter Liversidge… Predictably, this was one of my favorites. I’m such a sucker for neon lights.

During my last night in Miami, as I was walking to get into a car to the airport around 4am for my lovely 5.45am flight, I heard someone yell “don’t I know you from the internet?” I hadn’t slept much, my eyes were blurry and when I looked up I saw Ronen V. with Burning Dan in tow. I don’t really recall what else was said, but I do remember sending them on a wild goose chase to find a wrap party at the hub. I sent Ronen a photo (above) of the glowing Feel Good sign and told him to look for it. By the time they found it the party was over, which Ronen confirmed by sending me an eerily gorgeous photo (the second above) and I got to thinking - isn’t that what Art Basel is all about? A bunch of different people enjoying things from different perspectives? I think so… Well, that and a bunch of New Yorkers dressing up for posh parties. I was lucky enough to enjoy both.

“Feel Good” sign at Art Basel’s hub… Artist unknown (but it reminded me of Bruce Nauman’s work).
